J Calder (they/she) is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Colorado. They use sociophonetic and ethnographic methods to explore the articulation of marginalized identity in communities of queer/trans individuals and people of color. Their forthcoming monograph, Handsome Women, examines how a group of radical drag queens respond to the constraining pressures of the cisgender perceiving subject— a normative vantage point that expects sign usage to conform to gender-appropriate standards.
